Work/Occupation:

Sportswriter (most of the time). I have worked for Soul magazine (jazz writer), San Bernardino Sun, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and still do contract work for the San Fernando Valley Sun/El Sol.

Years involved with NABJLA and NABJ?

I joined the national NABJ in 1988, and NABJLA when it was formed (can't remember the year, getting old sucks).

What has been your favorite NABJLA event? What did you learn?

My favorite NABJ Convention was 1990 -- the only year it was in Los Angeles. It was also the same year I married my wife Gayle Pollard Terry, a reporter/editorial writer who worked at the Miami Herald, Boston Globe and Los Angeles Times.

What type of stories need more attention in entertainment? The continued rise of black male/female directors and producers in film and television; in journalism overall, how will BLM continue its momentum and how big a "playa" does Stacey Abrams become if she delivers two Demo senators in Georgia.

What advice from a mentor has helped shape your career?

Some great advice I can remember: Don't be afraid of where the story may take you.

The best thing about being an NABJLA member?

I usually don't have to drive in snow to attend the meetings.

Influential figure?

Too many to list. You can learn from anyone if you're willing to listen.

Favorite authors?

Again, too many. But I can always grab a Walter Mosley or Lee Child tome.

What is your favorite activity or hobby?

My favorite activity is getting up in the morning. If I can do that, I have a chance.

What is your favorite quote?

I have two favorite quotes, both from my late father, Frank Terry. "Don't shoot cannons at fleas"; if you're going to be angry, make sure that anger is worthy. And "It's nice to be important, but more important to be nice."

There have been several changes this year. What are you doing to keep yourself grounded?

I've been married to the same wonderful woman for 30 years. If that doesn't ground you, nothing can.
