MEET OUR TEAM
The Los Angeles chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists was formed in 1980 to provide advocacy for Black journalists in the Los Angeles area and encourage balanced news coverage of the black community. NABJLA also provides employment opportunity information as well as workshops for high school and college students.
Shar Jossell (she/her) is an award-winning journalist, celebrated host/emcee, and overall media luminary hailing from the Chicagoland area. While arts and entertainment are her primary focus, she writes at the intersections of gender, politics, race, and pop culture. A veteran red carpet correspondent, in-demand media consultant, and noted cultural commentator with a keen eye for authenticity and critical assessment, she approaches her work with a fearless uniqueness as only she can. Shar is currently a full-time freelancing reporter contributing to a variety of media outlets including NPR.
Ray Love Jr. (he/him) is a multi-hyphenate millennial professional with experience in publicity, production, marketing, photography, and graphic design. Currently, Ray works on the Marketing & Communication team with the Sundance Institute. Born and raised in Carol City (a neighborhood in Miami) he is a graduate of Florida A&M University's School of Journalism & Graphic Communication, where he led the award-winning student-run magazine, Journey. Ray is a passionate purveyor of Black culture and stays engaged with the latest in films, scripted series, and podcasts.
Tre'vell Anderson (they/them) is an award-winning journalist, noted podcast host, and authoress doing world-changing work around society and culture. A native of Charleston, SC, Tre'vell received their Bachelor's degree in sociology from “the nation's headquarters for Black male excellence,” Morehouse College. A year later, they earned their Master's degree in journalism from Stanford University. Past chapter president and former co-chair of NABJ’s LGBTQ+ Task Force, Tre’vell currently serves as NABJ’s Region IV Director on the national board.
Nadia R. Stanley (she/her) is a veteran television producer with credits on networks including FOX, Bravo, BET, and OWN. After receiving her business degree from The American University, Nadia honed her journalistic skills attending Santa Monica College to study broadcasting. After a 15-year career in television, Nadia pivoted to running a wealth management, financial services, and insurance solutions practice partnered with New York Life serving the entertainment community and beyond.
Jecoby D. Carter (he/him) is a creative and energetic digital content curator. A graduate of Albany State University’s Mass Communications program, he has a passion for assisting and amplifying unheard voices. In business, he seeks to assist entrepreneurs, independent brands, and growing businesses that are looking to make a mark and build a sustainable enterprise.
Archie Jay (he/him) Archie Jay is an award-winning podcast host, journalist, producer, and most recently, the Head of Editorial for the Golden Globes. Previously seen on iHeart, Hulu, FOX, and SiriusXM, he remains authentic through his bold storytelling and passion for producing uplifting content for engaging audiences.
Dr. Corey Emanuel (he/him) is a Los Angeles-based writer, producer, media psychologist, and published children’s book author. Dr. Corey is an instructor at FYI-Films, a program that teaches filmmaking to incarcerated teens. He also serves as a consultant for the Alliance of Leadership and Innovation for Victims of Exploitation (A.L.I.V.E.) which combats human trafficking in the Black community, and the Rodney King Foundation which is dedicated to ending police brutality and promoting social justice. Passionately dedicated to using media and psychology to tell stories that educate, inform, and inspire diverse audiences across the globe, Dr. Corey aims to aid in NABJLA’s efforts to better understand the media’s influence and advocate for the overall wellbeing of Black journalists and audiences as we continue to produce and consume media.
Reggie Elzey (he/him) originally from the Bay Area, is a Los Angeles-based digital video Producer/Editor with over 5 years of experience in news and television. He currently works at E! News as an Associate Producer/Editor, focusing on library content, red carpet livestreams and digital original programming. He holds a bachelor's degree in Communications from CSU Long Beach and his previous experience includes both scripted television and reality television development. He enjoys staying up to date on all things pop culture and is passionate about using his non-linear career path to empower youth.
Laarni Rosca Dacanay (she/her) is an award-winning internal/employee communications leader with 20 years of experience in media and entertainment. With a focus on Diversity, Equity + Inclusion (DEI), she is a trusted strategic partner to senior leadership and regularly advises on how DEI drives both culture and business needs. Currently, Laarni is Manager, DEI, Programs & Outreach for ABC's "The Bachelor" Franchise with NZK Productions/Warner Horizon Unscripted Television. Born and raised in Ohio, she holds a B.A., Communications from California State University, Fullerton, where she was the Keynote Speaker at CSUF's 10th Pilipino American Graduation.
Jarrett Hill (he/him) is an artist, professor, and award-winning journalist who’s contributed to a range of media outlets including New York Times, NPR, Variety, NBC News, and CNN. Jarrett is also an adjunct professor of journalism at the University of Southern California (USC), teaching graduate-level students at the Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism. While President of NABJLA, Jarrett served as part of a coalition of leaders from journalist-serving organizations to help form Senate Bill SB-98 for press freedom legislation signed into California law by Governor Gavin Newsom.
