2022 Board of Directors Election

It’s time for another election and choosing some of our leadership for the 2022-23 Board of Directors!

The committee of our Board of Directors at NABJLA are tasked with helping shape our events and programming, spearheading our advocacy efforts, and engaging our students and education communities. We are also looking for innovative, modern-thinking leaders that want to be a part of taking this organization into the future.

If you’re interested in helping us lead, we’d love to hear from you. Below you’ll find the roles that we’re looking for in members joining our team, how to submit yourself for candidacy, and more. If you’re not interested in joining the Board of Directors, but want to help, you can also let us know if you’re interested in serving on a committee.

We’re excited about our future here at NABJLA. We’re looking for people who are looking to be leaders in this community of working journalists, communications professionals, and educators of the next generation.


Open Board of Directors Roles

All members of the Board of Directors are required to be a member of one committee. The Board of Directors meets once monthly to work on the business of the organization, leadership training, and other board-related tasks. Our respective committees meet as needed, in timing set by the committees.

Secretary

This role requires someone that is highly organized, a great note-taker, that is keen on the details of both our meetings and our operations.

Our Secretary needs to be thinking about the best ways for us to communicate as a board, maintaining an archive of information and data.

Treasurer

This role requires someone with perspective and strategic thinking about how we operate financially. This person will work with the Executive Board and our accountant on a regular basis to modernize our financial operations. This person should be savvy with both keeping organized and with record-keeping

General Member

These roles are all required to be a member of a Board Committee. Our current committees include Programming, Education, and Advocacy. Each of these committees meets periodically, as respectively needed, to carry out the varying tasks and initiatives of these committees.

Being a General Member of the Board is a leadership role that requires being innovative, attentive, and being a great team member.

Membership Director

This role requires a people person with great communication, writing, and outreach skills. They should be someone who has an upbeat personality who loves to help people. This person will also be the main person operating our online platform to keep up with all our members, keeping them informed about their membership, ideating surveys and polls, etc.

  • your membership number (log in and find it here)

  • your full name

  • your professional affiliation/freelance status

  • the role for which you’re submitting

  • a candidate statement (100-word maximum)


Election Information

Our election will be held immediately following a candidates’ forum during our February general body meeting. Dues-paying members in good standing by 11:59pm February 18th will be sent an email with a personalized link to vote. Voting will be open for 72 hours. Please make sure elections@nabjla.org is in your contacts to avoid missing the email by it going to your spam.

Note: We believe that all members of our organization should have the right to a say in its direction. By a vote of the board last year, all members of NABJLA are now authorized to vote, not just those (formerly) designated as Full Members. For those that were previously designated as Associate members have been upgraded to Full Members.
